Accomodation-Ships
The ships used for these ‘school weeks’ are traditional sailing vessels. These ships have sleeping accommodation for a maximum of 10 to 30 passengers in a mix of 2 to 6 persons per cabin. Usually groups are accompanied by two teachers/ parents. Furthermore the vessels have modern showers, toilets, fully equipped galleys (kitchens), and a living chamber with benches/chairs, tables, radio/CD player and even sometimes a TV/video. The berths have mattresses, mattress sheets, pillows/ -cases: generally most groups bring their own sleeping bags, although additional quilts and sheets are also for rent. Most weeks are chartered on self-catering basis, but also a ships cook can be supplied.
The ships are all officially certified and yearly inspected by the Dutch professional shipping authorities and therefore comply with all the expected safety (and personal insurance) standards and equipment. Most ships were built (steel construction) as sail freighters around the beginning of the 20th century and restored and converted to comfortable passenger carriers from the 1970’s and onwards.
All ships are crewed by a professional skipper and a qualified shipmate/instructor. They both speak English. The crew cannot sail the ship alone: the passengers are expected to help man the ship: hoist and set sails, winch swords, navigate etc….but naturally all under full instruction, guidance and supervision of the crew.
